Treasurer's Report - Steve White The tally for this season's Bird Seed Sale fundraiser is nearly complete. The membership was superb in its support once again. We have grossed a total of $12,113.50. After payments to Wetsel, Inc. for the seed, we made a net profit of $3,924.07. In my own observation, I would add that the birds in Singers Glen like most of the offerings from Wetsel's. The peanut butter suet cakes, home made by Rockingham Bird Club members, were especially well received. Thanks to all who participated and made this year's sales such a success

Bird Club Book Club - Maureen Gallagher-McLeod Dr. Elwood Fisher's Book Published Dr. Elwood Fisher's Book, Thrilling Trillies & Captivating Cattails, Ethnobotanical Essays of Mid-Appalachia, has been published and is available from the Shenandoah Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society. The book was printed this past spring, and the Shenandoah Chapter dedicated it to the memory of Carol Gardner who served the Chapter in many caring ways. Carol wrote the foreword for the book. The book is a collection of essays about the past uses for many of the common plants found in the Appalachian Mountains. Dr. Fisher was introduced to plants by his grandmother who was a herbalist and medicine woman. His degree in Biology has meshed well with his hands-on plant knowledge in this informative very readable book. Cost is $10.00. Copies of the book will be available at the January meeting. If you would like a copy you may contact Tom Mizell at 828-6059. |
