Saw-whet Owls Highland Retreat -Wednesday, November 8 and Monday, November 13
Mark your calendars for evening trips to Highland Retreat to observe the banding of Saw-whet Owls
captured along the nearby mountain ridge. Trips are planned for Wednesday, November 8 and Monday,
November 13 for this nighttime treat. Away from city lights and in the quiet of the forest we are afforded
a special opportunity to closely observe the Saw-whet owls as Clair Mellinger studies and bands them.
Tentative plans are to carpool from the Food Lion parking lot on Route 42 just north of the Virginia
Mennonite Retirement Center. Meet at 7:00 PM at the parking lot and dress warmly! Call Tom Mizell
at 828-6059 if you plan to attend
.

Hillandale Park -Thursday, November 16 - Meet 9:00 AM for a leisurely walk. We should be finished
by noon. We continue the process of documenting the birds present in the vicinity of the Rockingham Bird
Club's proposed birding trail. The purpose of this monthly trip is to produce a seasonal listing of the birds.
If members are in the park at other times you may share your bird sightings with Tom Mizell. Call him at
828-6059 if you are interested
.

Potomac River Ducks - Monday, December 11 - Tom Pendleton will be leading this trip. More details
will appear in the December newsletter.

Treasurer's Report – Steve White

One last plea to remit your membership dues for 2006-07. Send them to: 7738 Sparkling Springs Road;
Singers Glen, VA 22850 or bring them to the November 2nd meeting to Polly Scott, who will be standing
in for me as I travel to the Baltimore area to give my daughter away in marriage. When I return the
following week (November 6th), I will begin calling those who have not yet renewed their memberships.

The Bird Seed Sale gross revenue is approaching last year's fine performance, thanks in large measure to
Chuck Kahler's superb support in handling this fund-raising project. Thanks, too, to volunteers who helped
with the distribution of the seed. Your dedication makes us one of the more active and well-funded bird
clubs of those with whom I have networked in my short time as treasurer. I do not yet have a final figure,
but our gross sales have topped $11,000 to date.

Bird Club Book Club - Maureen Gallagher-McLeod

The BCBC will meet Thursday, November 30, 2006, at 6:00 PM at the home of Elizabeth Ihle. We will
share a meal and discuss a new book, Letter from Eden: A Year at Home in The Woods by Julie Zickefoose.
This book is beautifully illustrated by the author! I have had the pleasure of birding with Julie during outings
she has led at the New River Birding Festival in West Virginia during recent years.

This is a book I will personally treasure reading! If you are interested in joining us, contact Maureen at
famcleod@earthlink.net or 896-9541.
